Sunday 6th June

Group 1 - We started off the day with a bit of volunteering, we hadn’t expected volunteering which involved working on a farm, but we spent the morning picking onions from a field which a woman owned and used to donate 100% of the produce to charity. Although it was a boiling hot day it was really fun and it was interesting to pick the onions and see how they grew. The morning also gave us a real sense of giving. On our way to the next activity we had a surprise lunch with group 2 which was really yummy. After lunch we went to an amazing Crater in the Negev. The sand was all different colours and we used bottles to gather the sand to make pretty designs. In the afternoon we went to Sde Boker, the Kibbutz which Ben Gurion used to live on. It was fascinating to learn about his life and see his house, but it was a little weird that it was exactly how it used to be when he lived there. The day finished relatively early in order to allow us a good amount of sleep before Massada tomorrow, so we’re going to sign off now to go and get our beauty sleep ready for the sunrise climb tomorrow.

From the Staff
The students were great with the volunteering this morning and it was lovely to see them throw themselves into it with such gusto. They really enjoyed the coloured sands and asked some great questions at the Ben Gurion museum, hopefully they will approach tomorrow, a tiring day, with the same enthusiasm.

Group 3 - Today has not been an easy day, but it has been very rewarding.  It began by watching a film about Michael Levin, an American who joined the Israeli army.  Sadly, he was killed in combat and we learnt all about his story, and especially his belief in having a dream.  From there we went to Har Herzl, the military cemetery.  We saw Michael’s grave, as well as Yitzchak Rabin’s.  We were also fortunate to have Gideon Black join us, and tell us about his friend and cousin, Yoni who was sadly killed, and their experiences.  We found this visit very moving.  From there we went to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum.  We were guided on the tour by a man named Jackie and were touched, saddened, and hopeful for the future upon our exit.  We particularly liked the pretty and moving children’s memorial.  Our final stop for the day was the Herzl Centre; a brilliantly interactive museum where we learnt all about Theodor Herzl, the father of modern political Zionism.  Since we’d had such an early start, we then checked in to the hotel (we’re back at Beit Yehuda) and are having a little well earned rest time before dinner.  Tomorrow is our last full day and we’re both ready to come home and yet sad to leave!
